Freeman, Alexander (1838–1897), astronomer and teacher of mathematics, was born on 28 January 1838 in Blackheath, Surrey, the son of John Freeman, a chemist and druggist, and his wife, Mary Ann. From Merchant Taylors' School, London, he entered St John's College, Cambridge, in 1857.
