Kyd, Robert (1746–1793), botanist and army officer, was born in Forfarshire. Little is known of his family and early life. He may have studied medicine at Edinburgh. In 1764 he obtained a cadetship and was appointed ensign in the Bengal Engineers. The following year he was promoted to lieutenant.
