Mackay, John Alexander (1889–1983), theologian and Hispanic scholar, was born on 17 May 1889 in Inverness, Scotland, the eldest of the five children of Duncan Mackay (1859–1948), a tailor and clothier, and his wife, Isabella Macdonald (1869–1933).
