Hartley, Sir Frank (1911–1997), pharmacist, was born on 5 January 1911 in Nelson, Lancashire, the son of Robinson King Hartley (d. c.1916), a plumber, and his wife, Mary, née Holt. He attended Nelson municipal secondary school and in 1926 obtained the northern universities' school certificate. His ambition was to be a schoolteacher but his bursary from the county council was withdrawn when it was discovered that he was deaf in one ear.
