Carte, Samuel (1652–1740), antiquary and Church of England clergyman, was born on 21 October 1652 at Coventry, Warwickshire, the son of Thomas Carte, clothier. He was educated at the free school in Coventry before attending Magdalen College, Oxford, where he graduated BA in 1673 and MA in 1675. He was ordained deacon in 1673 and priest in 1677.
