Anderson, Sir Robert Rowand (1834–1921), architect, was born on 5 April 1834 in Edinburgh, the younger son and third of the four children of James Anderson, a solicitor, and his wife, Margaret Rowand of Glasgow. Anderson studied at George Watson's Hospital, Edinburgh, from 1841 to 1848, before leaving to take up a legal apprenticeship for four years.
