Stapledon, Sir (Reginald) George (1882–1960), grassland scientist, was born at Lakenham, Northam, Devon, on 22 September 1882. He was the sixth of seven children of William Stapledon, master mariner and shipping agent, and his second wife, Mary, daughter of William Clibbert, shipbuilder. He also had three half siblings.
