Rowland Burdon (1756–1838), politician, banker, and businessman, was born on 28 December 1756 in Newcastle upon Tyne. He proved an active and independently minded parliamentarian, was made a freemason in 1790, and was a member of the Newcastle Literary and Philosophical Society.

Elizabeth Barrett Browning

Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806–1861), poet and writer, was born on 6 March 1806 at Coxhoe Hall, co. Durham. She was widely popular in the United Kingdom and the United States during her lifetime, due to stands against social injustice, and influenced a number of writers including Edgar Allan Poe and Emily Dickinson.
